Fast read. Good Multi-generational story. Although quilts are part of the story, the real story is about various individuals within or involved with a specific family who immigrated to US in mid 1800's. Part of a series, but he book can stand on its own without needing to read the other books. The story is about people, with quilts as a background. Lots of wonderful Christmas traditions included.

The Christmas Quilt Elm Creek Quilts Series #8 Jennifer Chiaverini 9780739458815 Books Reviews

I have read all the Elm Creek Novels and I have really enjoyed most of them, this one included.

Some of it is repeated from the other novels but I would not say "word for word". I did not find it too repetitive. Most of the book is new and very well written. It does take place before the latest book and that can be confusing at times because it being a new book you automatically put it in the time sequence of after the latest previous release.

It's a sweet and sometimes very sad story but mixed in with that is a feeling of hope and renewal. I would definitely reccomend this book for anyone who is a fan of the Quilt Books and for anyone who is new to the series.

The two best in the series are "The Quilter's Apprentice" and "The Runaway Quilt". That latter is my absolute favorite!

Have a Blessed Christmas!
Unfortunately, I am reading this series all out of order. I was not able when I started to find a list of numerical order, plus many seem to be written in retrospect. The Christmas Quilt was just a joy to read during the post holiday season. I am determined to read them all, and would love to have the "quilt" books. The historical novels look very interesting also. Plan 3.
About a month ago, I began reading Jennifer Chiaverini's Elm Creek Quilt series. These books are well-written and are genuinely nice stories. They are especially interesting if you are a quilter, which I am. I really get caught-up in the personalities of the characters and in the various things going on in their lives, which, in my opinion, is the sign of a good author. It is also refreshing to read a series of books that don't contain obscene language, sexual situations or violence.
However, going on someone else's comments, I decided to read this book before going on to the 3rd one. I recommend that, if anyone wants to start at the beginning of the series and work their way through all of her books, "The Christmas Quilt" should really be #2 in the series (instead of #8), because it explains a lot about the characters and situations in the first book and carries on the same theme. I hope there are no other books that are "out of order". If anyone knows that there are, please let me know.
One other thing...Why are three of the books in the series, including this one, smaller than all the other books? I think that's weird and it throws them out of proportion if you want to display the series on a bookshelf. With that exception, I am very pleased with these stories. These books are "keepers".
The first Elm Creek Quilt book I read was the Runaway Quilt. I was hooked and had to go back and start at the beginning with Quilter's Appentice. I don't quilt myself but have found these stories really great. Following the life of the Bergstrom family and how they made a life in Pennsylvania is probably the story of many people who immigrated to this country and built a whole new life raising a family and creating a business. They lived through wars and depression good times and bad and as a family stuck together for many generations. These are the stories of that family and how it becomes reconnected after years of estrangement. I have recommended these books to all the quilters I know and even one or two that I don't know. Even if you don't quilt these stories are great. They kind of make you feel warm and fuzzy all over.
I loved this book. It brought back childhood memories of my mother, my sister and my dad. Wonderful memories of family traditions and that there is nothing more sacred then friends, family and forgiving. I cried and was so deeply touched. It had every emotion and life,s lessons. I truly enjoyed it and couldn't put down.
This book was a real disappointment. It didn't have much content at all. And it was written as if it were taking place at the current point in the series, but it ignored many of the recent developments in the story. I recently started reading this series, and started with the first book and continued right through the series in order. I'll be more careful in the future. This book was a total waste of money.
What could be better than Christmas at elm creek manor? It was good to get back to Sylvia and Sarah again. I love all the characters and instructors at the quilt weeks , but there's something special about wallowing in Sylvia's memories of Christmas' past. This series is best if you begin with the first book but after that, skipping around is fine and reading them in exact order does not take away from anything. So if you quilt or even if you don't , this is a great read!
