When I Was Yours edition by Samantha Towle Contemporary Romance eBooks
When I Was Yours is the first book I’ve read by Samantha Towle. It was recommended to me by a friend, and I instantly liked the blurb and the cover. Besides that, I love a second-chance romance – two people with a past, who never stopped loving each other, trying to make it work again. Reading this book I was certainly not disappointed, all the ingredients for a good second-chance romance are present.Adam Gunner is a mess, growing up in luxury with a dysfunctional family at best has left him scarred, the disappearance of his beloved wife after just one week of marriage has ruined him. Although they married at a very young age, Adam felt things with her he hadn’t known for all of his life, he certainly didn’t feel with his parents or other girls. Nowadays Adam is a man-w**re, trying to avoid women who look like his ex, but always in the company of a woman who knows the score – nothing serious, just a good time. When he sees his ex-wife Evie for the first time in ten years, all the hurt and anger he still feels come out, he demands the answers he still needs.
“No matter what was happening between Evie and me, I always wanted her— even when she was p***ing me off, which was not that often. But wanting her now, after what she did to me… I’m not really sure what that says about me. Probably that I’m f***ed up.”
Evie Taylor met the man of her dreams at the young age of 17, and married him at 18. Even though she has left him after a marriage of just one week, she still loves him with all of her heart. Leaving him was the most difficult thing she has ever done, and she still feels the pain – the day she left Adam, she stopped truly living. Coming back to the place she left isn’t easy for her, but is necessary for the education of her younger sister. Seeing Adam again makes her feel terrified, she still feels she can’t give him the answers he needs.
“He couldn’t let go of not knowing the truth, why I left him, whereas I couldn’t let go because I never could find a way to stop loving him. Our reasons may have differed, but ultimately, we were in the same position.”
The relationship between young Adam and Evie is a sweet and real, they love each other and want to spent their lives together. Outside forces make Evie to decide to walk away from all she holds dear. The present Adam and Evie are full of hurt and anger, both hide important information for each other. Under all the pain, the attraction and feelings are still present – it pains me to see two people who obviously still feel so much for each other can’t tell the truth. When all cards are finally in the open, the couple can start slowly to rebuild the relationship they once had.
This book takes you from the present time to the past, and back. This way you can see the sweet, evolving relationship between Adam and Evie when they were so young, and their reuniting as adults. I understand Evie’s reason for leaving, why she did what she did, she still was so young back then. What I didn’t understand, was she didn’t return sooner, to explain all to Adam. During their ten-year separation, Adam tries to stop his grieve over Evie by having sex with her look-alikes, a lot. I understand his reasoning and behavior, but I don’t like the fact Evie herself stays celibate during all those years, doesn’t even kiss another man. Besides the relationship between Adam and Evie, I adore Max. The friendship between Max and Adam is a good and honest one, he is always there when Adam needs him – providing valuable advice.
“I’ve loved you from the first moment I saw you sitting up here, and I’ve loved you all the time in between. Every second of every minute of every day for the last eleven years, I have loved you. And I forgive you for not telling me the truth. I understand why you didn’t. Now, I need you to forgive me, too.”
I love this book, the story of Adam and Evie feels real, and I like Samantha Towle’s writing style. I give this story 4 stars.

4.5 heart-wrenching stars
I’ve always been a fan of Samantha Towle. I also adore second-chance love stories. Put them together – you’ve got quite the winner in my book. This book was incredible; as I write this my eyes are still full of happy tears due to reading the last page of this book and I can barely focus on my monitor. I loved this story!
Adam fell in love when he was 18 years old; he lived in Malibu and silently watched a beautiful young girl sitting on a rock outside of his beach-front rented house as she sketches each day (he comes from money, but money without parental love has left him void of what a young man really needs growing up). He’s been trying to get up the courage to talk with her – which is unusual for him. Adam is not shy. But there’s something about this girl that draws him in and makes him feel like a love-struck speechless man struggling for the right words that evade him. When his best friend/non-blood brother/roommate gives him a hard time for being afraid to approach her, he learns Max (his roomie) actually spoke to this vision sitting on a rock outside their house the day before and learned her name was Evie.
And Evie, although she’s been sitting on that very rock for a while sketching, she’s been very aware she’s had Adam staring at her from afar. Max told her Adam’s been trying to work up the courage to talk with her so she’s on to him. But she’s intrigued by him too. Little does he know she’s been sketching him watching her on the beach…

Max told her that I’d been watching her – like a stalker. I’m going to kill him. I’m actually going to kill him and dump his body in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and I won’t feel an ounce of remorse. “Max,” I grunt out, practically choking on the heat burning up my throat. “The guy you met yesterday, the one who helped you when you dropped your bag, did he tell you all of that, about me. . .watching –“ I can’t even finish that sentence. Her face clears, and she smiles sweetly, giving a light shrug, as she hitches her bag up her shoulder. “Can’t say I’ve met a Max,” Her lips innocently purse together. She’s so met him. And she so knows I’ve been watching her. I should want to die from the horror of the embarrassment. But I’ve realized one glaring fact. Even while knowing all about me stalker-watching her, she still wanted me to ask her out. I want to marry her on the spot – or at the very least, get her naked…”Anyway, I have to run-“ “Wait, what?” “I have to go,” she says on a smile, taking a small step away. “No, wait. Go out with me. Right now. I’m not a serial killer, and I’m not really a stalker, honestly. I just liked watching you sketch-in the non-weirdest way possible.” I give her my best smile, and she giggles…”I’ll let you know,” she says, taking another step away. What?...This never happens to me. She’s like my very own brand of kryptonite, and oddly, I like it – a lot. Evie turns to face me but continues walking backward, that stunning smile still on her face. “Well, I figured one more day to wait wouldn’t hurt you, considering it’s taken you a week to ask me out.” I’m pretty sure I just fell in love…
Although, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This book does not include any sort of insta-love within it. But the way these two met was adorable and shows what complete flirts they both become with each another. And then they do date, fall in love, are over-the-top happy, get married, and then a week later, she disappears with a note saying, “Sorry.” Hmm. Not exactly the stuff fairy-tales are made of, right? Well, yes and no. Because he’s never gotten over her. She’s never gotten over him. And then suddenly, ten years later, she reappears and it blows his mind.
This book switched back and forth from Evie’s to Adam’s POV and it was perfect; getting into both of their heads and learning (a little at a time, though) the secrets that linger within both of their minds.
And things aren’t always as they seem (as we’ve learned time and again with romance novels) and this is no exception. When she disappeared without a trace, it was not in an effort to hurt Adam and she had a very compelling reason to do so. But Adam only knows he’s hurt and he’s never gotten beyond that. What he doesn’t initially see – Evie’s every bit as hurt as he is about the entire situation. I think, although she’d deny it, Evie wanted to come back to see if he stilled loved her (even though she’s terrified of the answer). These two could truly be a bit better at communicating with each other (once she returns to town after ten years away), but they’re only human. They’re both dancing around each other; each of them knowing deep in their hearts how much they still love the other and how no one else would ever make them come close to that feeling again. They are in love but they are both too afraid to do much about it.
But they are like moths drawn to light – once they see each other, it is impossible to ignore the other. And this is where their dance begins…

The sight of the tears staining her cheeks wrecks me. I never could bear to see Evie cry. Unable not to, I reach over and brush my fingers over her cheek, collecting her tears. The feel of her skin is electric against mine. And I don’t miss her sharp intake of breath. Her eyes lower, like it’s too hard to look at me. “I’m crying because I’m sad. And I’m sad because all we do when we see each other is fight and hurt one another. Mostly, I’m sad because I miss you. I’ve missed you for ten years, and I’m tired of missing you, tired of the hollow space in my chest where you used to be.” When she lifts those whiskey eyes to mine, I see all the raw pain in them, and I know she’s telling me the truth about that. Something changes in this moment, and things that seemed important to me before don’t seem so vital anymore. But what is important are those words she just spoke. I’ve waited ten years to hear her say those words, to say that she’s missed me. Now, she has. Maybe it’s because she said she missed me or maybe because she’s wearing my shirt or because I’ve lost my **** ******* mind, or maybe it’s all those things combined, but I can’t stop myself. I kiss her. I kiss her fiercely. I kiss her with ten years of pent-up anger and need and longing and desperation. And I know, in that second when my lips touch hers, that I won’t regret one moment of what’s about to happen….
The amount of pain these two have had to endure by being apart for the past ten years is heart-wrenching. I felt so much for both of them. The pain, the loss, the regret; it’s all there. But beneath all of that, there’s still an incredible amount of love they have for one another – the type of love that never dies.
But they have a lot to get through to resolve the hurt between them. And they each have to fight hard to get to a place where they both so desperately want to be – together again. This is not an easy undertaking and as the reader, we get to live it all with them.
This book not only bounces back and forth between Evie and Adam’s POV, but it also bounces back and forth by ten years – we get to see the beginning of their relationship (as we read above, when they met for the first time) all the way through to their marriage and then to her disappearance. And then we see how they both feel and react when she returns.
This is truly an excellent second-chance book. I loved it a lot and my heart seriously felt for these two wounded people struggling to find their footing after being separated for so long. This one is going onto both of my favorites lists (on my and onto Goodreads)! I will no doubt want to reread this book in the future and enjoy it all over again. Their journey wasn’t an easy one by any means, which is for us, of course, why it’s so good. I seriously recommend reading this one!
I’d like to thank Samantha Towle for providing an ARC of this book for an unbiased review. This one was a no-brainer kind of love – I didn’t have to try to convince myself I wanted to love reading it, I just simply did!
A weak female protagonist, gaps in continuity and the "big secret" that's obvious from the first few chapters make for a book that exemplifies "life is too short to read bad books."
Do yourself a favor, skip to 85 % find out the "shocking" truth and then read Evie's lame excuses on page 282/283. And, if you truly want to waste additional time, read to the end and epilogues. The real HEA here is that the book ends.
It 's everything a second chance romance should not be- predictable, cliched, and full of the character's self-pity.
A big disappointment from an otherwise excellent author.
