The story line of this book was intriguing. In the early 1950s, a woman, Myrtle, now known as Tilly, returns to her childhood home in Dungatar, a small hardscrabble town in the Austrailian outback. She had been cast out twenty years earlier at the age of ten, torn from her home and her mother, Molly Dunnage, after being accused unjustly of a heinous act. Tilly unites with her mother, now known as Mad Molly, and takes charge. The intervening years have not been too kind to Molly, but Tilly sets out to right all that has gone wrong.

Now a highly accomplished dressmaker, Tilly overcomes the antipathy of the local women, most of whom are almost comically ignorant, small-minded, and nasty, and begins creating beautiful and elegant Balenciaga and Dior inspired dresses for them. Tilly forms a friendship with Sergeant Farrat, the town's sole constable, who harbors his own secrets, and begins a romance with Teddy, her handsome neighbor and the town's star athlete.

Still, the initial acceptance of Tilly's haute couture efforts on their behalf, does not change the nature of the townspeople, and the malicious nature of many of them bubbles up and spills over once again onto Tilly and her eccentric mother. Not even Teddy's unconditional love for Tilly can breach that wall of hatred. Then the unthinkable happens, but no matter, as Tilly has plans of her own, as the town will soon discover.

This is a dark novel, somewhat satirical in tone, with a penchant for the unlikely. The author sets a somber tone with moments of comic relief. At times, the book is somewhat rambling, and it could have used a defter hand in terms of its editing. It is definitely unsettling in many respects and could definitely have been a contender but for its somewhat poor editing. I recently saw the movie, after I read the book, and this is one of the few times I have ever thought that the movie was better than the book. In fact, the movie was fantastic! It is everything the book could have been. Still, the book is worth a read, and one will derive a modicum of enjoyment from it.

Interesting story line and quirky characters. I liked the author's style of writing and how she revealed the main character, Tilly Dunnage, over time, yet kept her a mystery even by the end. I found it difficult to keep the names of the secondary characters straight until further in.
I was really disappointed by this book, given that it had great reviews. I found the writing to be confusing, the author changed track from one sentence to the next without starting a new paragraph. A huge cast of characters also added to the confusion without adding to the story.
I was disappointed in this book. Expected it to be much better being a bestseller and a movie. Simply not much here. Some quirky small town characters but not enough of a story to bother with.
I wanted to read this book as it is a movie on and I like to read the book beforehand. At first I wasn't sure about the story but as I got more into the book I found it interesting and very different. The characterization was so detailed and WHAT a story. I don't
think I've read anything like it and I am glad I read it and will watch the movie.
Ms. Ham, the author, does a beautiful job building interesting and distinct characters which she then weaves through intricate relationships. Adding believable scenery, the story becomes rich in detail. This is a well told tale of familial reconciliation, industrious passions and eventual revenge.
Too many characters introduced all at once - very confusing & difficult to get one's teeth in. By no means am I a prude but some of the scenes were just gross & made me squirm. Ham didn't need those scenes to write/sell a book. The book wasn't my cup of tea. Would never have bought it only for the fact it was the chosen book for my Sept Book Club meeting. Wouldn't ever recommend it. Now I have a spare book in my house - anyone want it?
I almost didn't read this due to the average reviews. So glad I ignored them, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have even started reading parts of it again. I rushed through it because I was seeing the movie and of course didn't want to see it before finishing the book. The movie was OK. Good to see some of the characters come to life however, the book is BRILLIANT! I have it on my kindle but have also bought it in paperback to have on the shelf.
