Lucia is probably the greatest creation of E. F. Benson, a social climbing socialite from the small village of Riseholme. A beautifully written and sharply observed comedy, exploring the social life of Edwardian high society. This novel, originally published in 1927, is being republished here together with a new introductory biography of the author.

Beautifully read by a highly skilled actress - only one reservation - her representation of Georgie Pilson's voice is too masculine. All others are superb. .All the Benson novels in the Lucia series are lightweight but they are exquisitely entertaining comedies of manners. Benson knew the class system intimately and wove its prejudices, false civility and superficial Christian values into entertaining novels. Read carefully and analytically the five novels educate the reader in the behavior of between the wars middle class. Superficially read, they are fun.
Abridgements, however, pay them no compliments. No doubt, the person tasked with this job worked hard to fit it to three CD's but out of necessity, cut too so much of the foliage that we are only left with bare branches.
From one who thoroughly knows all five Lucia novels , I can say that a very great deal of the comedy has been lost in these audio productions. It is the fine detail and wry turn of phrase that makes them entertaining. I would recommend that potential customers buy the book instead - much more rewarding. This production, in my view, was not good value for money.

Lucia in London edition by E F Benson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Wonderful! The author has such a sly wit that it sometimes creeps up on you and you find yourself laughing out loud. Marvellously perceptive of human nature and so well written that I found myself liking Lucia very much even though, if I knew her in real life, I would avoid her like the plague.
This is a great introduction to the maddening Lucia. Without Mapp, but with Georgie, Daisy, and Pepino, along with a full court of other delicious characters. "Luciaphile" was coined in this book, and the thin plot lets us feel Lucia's Moonlight Sonata, complete with sighs, her brief attempt to rule over London society, and her brilliant retreat back to ruling Riseholme. If you already love Lucia, you will love this. If you don't, I'd start with Mapp and Lucia, for an even more absurd version, and come back to this one.
But lightweight. Lucia 's efforts to rise in society require such desperate ingenuity that Lucia-watching becomes a popular pastime among the upperclass she's trying to woo. The ending is a bit abrupt, shedding a more humane light on Lucia.
Loved all of the books in this series.
This series is one of the most delightful reads ever. If you want a look inside village life in England after WW1, this is for you. The wit and quick repartee, the descriptions of daily life are enchanting and make you wish you could step back in time to experience it yourself...oh wait! you can!
I have also purchased the DVD series of the films that were made, and was delighted to 'see' the characters are just as I imagined...
How many teas, lunches and dinners can one attend? Apparently quite a few if you a Lucia. I read this book for a book club, so it is not exactly my cup of tea. I got a little tired of the endless social life of a social climber -- all rather tedious and boring. I am looking forward to hearing what others in my book club have to say about this and perhaps they can enlighten me on any redeeming qualtiies of Lucia and this book.
I read the "Mapp and Lucia" books many years ago, and was delighted to find them on . Reading them again is as much a pleasure as it was to read them the first time. The time/era is set long ago, but the personalities of the various characters are as topical and typical as they were then. Most highly-recommended, especially if you want to learn how to make the perfect "put-down" in the most polite and gracious way. Lucia turns it into an art...
