I have always been a Pilcher fan. I usually prefer biographies, political and historical or also Daniel Silva or Nelson de Mille sometime but for pure escape in characters, backgrounds and literary talent, SEPTEMBER is hard to beat. Pure and simple it moves you. Pilcher has a rare quality to bring you characters that build the story and always brings to life in descriptions of the countryside and homes. SEPTEMBER is certainly ranks as one of the ten best novels I have read. For me it is a masterpiece. I would rate SEPTEMBER number one of her books, then COMING HOME second and SHELL SEAKERS third.

I love Rosamunde Pilcher, she is my favorite author of all time (I'm 58 and have been an avid reader, always). I love the way she creates her characters in such a way you feel as if you know them, you feel right along with them. This book was good, but just a bit predictable. My favorite is The Shell Seekers and Coming Home!
I haven't read Rosamunde Pilcher in many years, but always loved her writing. I thought I'd read most of her work, but I had somehow missed this one, written just 3 years after the Shell Seekers. September certainly did not disappoint, with typically wonderful characters and a totally engrossing story. The novel is set in the Scottish Highlands and you can imagine yourself there with Pilcher's descriptions. I couldn't put the book down.
At points in the book I felt totally connected to each character and every detail of their life. However, almost as much I found myself struggling to get through some of it and hoping I would get back that feeling of connection with all the characters. I don't think I did totally. Just seemed too long for such a short period of time.
September, by the beloved author of The Shell Seekers Rosamunde Pilcher, is another book in a long line by this author which most readers will enjoy thoroughly. Set in Scotland, this book focuses on several people gathering together to celebrate the 21st birthday of a local girl. While firmly set in the present through the use of flashbacks, we come to know these people and the events which bring them to this point in time.
Among the various people gathering members and friends of two well known families of the village. Archie Balmerino is a major landowner of the area who is a Lord rather down on his income. During a military exercise he suffered a tragedy which has altered his chance for a livelihood once he left the military as well as leaving him emotionally fragile. Isobel his loving wife hosts tourist families during the season at their stately home while their daughter travels the continent trying to find a place for herself. And then there is Pandora, Archie's sister who left the family home at 18, and is only now returning after 20 years to be with family and friends before it is too late.
The Aird family includes Violet, the 78 year old matriarch of the family and a woman reminiscent of Penelope Keeling from The Shell Seekers. Her prosperous son Edmund is married to his second wife Virginia although he has a secret he never shared with her which is now threatening to undo them. Alexa is Edmund's daughter from his first marriage who now finds happiness with an older man and Henry the progeny of the Airds second marriage is about to leave for boarding school at the tender age of 8 which upsets Virginia greatly. And seeing over this family is Edie who as Mrs. Aird's housekeeper cares for all of them as if they were her own
For the most part I liked this book. It was the third Rosamunde Pilcher book that I had read, the first being Winter Solstice and the second being The Shell Seekers. While this book follows the Shell Seekers and has one character in common, the references to The Shell Seekers are few and very small so you don't have to read them in order. While in "September"s favor there were no characters that I really couldn't stand, there were also none that I really loved either. I liked most of them well enough but none of them really jumped out at me as being special enough to make me get completely sucked into the book, anxiously awaiting a time when I could do some reading. The Shell Seekers definitely made me feel that as did Winter Solstice...but Coming Home(which I read after September) REALLY grabbed me! I LOVED that book and it is definitely my favorite of Ms. Pilcher's books. Although very long, longer even than this one which is over 700 pages, I never felt like it was TOO long.in fact from the time I got to the halfway point I was dreading the end and kept checking to see how much was left..if it had been another 1000 pages I would not have minded at all. September also didn't seem too long to me although I have heard others say it was. I was engrossed in the story and never felt that it was dragging...both books went by much faster than any previous books of that length that I have read in the past.
I absolutely recommend this book if you are a fan of Aga Sagas..the few things that did annoy me will probably not bother anyone else(I'm not listing them because they give away too much).
In "September", Rosamunde Pilcher introduces us to a richly textured cross-section of the faded but still vibrant old-family aristocracies of post War Scotland. Her word pictures paint the landscape in our mind's eye as she assembles three generations of a far-flung family and their friends, for a September party gathering. There is a little something for everyone anxious mothers and daughters, reluctant bachelors, a widower, a mad woman, even a middle aged rebel without a cause who is in her own way perhaps also mad. The scenario is "Veddy British" in its way. The characters speak a cultural and language dialect that American readers may find both highly literary and at times a bit unfamiliar.

All in all, the novel and its characters are charming, highly readable and entertaining. An engaging read.
